Overview
This page covers the city of Corpus Christi and Padre Island, where Padre Island National Seashore sets many of the seasons. It covers only what differs here. For the whole Coastal Bend by month, including fishing seasons, hurricane season and what to pack, see When to visit the Coastal Bend.
The National Park Service (NPS) says the island's weather can vary widely and change quickly. It gives the average wind speed as 5 to 25 miles per hour all year and says relative humidity seldom drops below 70 percent.
Season by season
The NPS describes each season at the national seashore. The table below shows the Corpus Christi station, and the Gulf water column shows the average along the city's beaches.
At the Corpus Christi station the warmest month is August (average high 95°F) and the coolest is January (average low 48°F). September is the wettest month, with 5.4 inches, and February is the driest, with 1.3.

These are the NOAA 1991 to 2020 climate normals for the Corpus Christi station (USW00012924), from the National Centers for Environmental Information. Temperatures are rounded to the nearest degree Fahrenheit and rain to the nearest tenth of an inch. Gulf water is the average along Corpus Christi beaches as the National Park Service publishes it, rounded to the nearest degree.
Spring
The NPS says spring daytime temperatures average between 70 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, with lows between 50 and 60. The park sits along the Central Flyway, and the NPS says over 380 bird species there are migratory, overwintering or resident. The Kemp's ridley sea turtle begins nesting on the beach in late April.
Summer
Daytime temperatures are usually in the mid-90s, the NPS says, with very humid conditions and sea breezes that moderate the heat in the afternoon and evening. Nesting continues through mid-July. The NPS releases sea turtle hatchlings only in the summer months, and calls a release a popular mid-summer activity. Sea turtles come onto the beach only in the spring and summer nesting season, and the NPS says it is rare to meet a nesting turtle on an ordinary visit.
Fall
Fall daytime temperatures are like spring's, between 70 and 80 degrees, according to the NPS, with lows between 50 and 60. The NPS says most rain at Padre Island falls near the beginning and end of hurricane season.
Winter
Winter highs are usually between 50 and 70 degrees, and the NPS says they can drop into the upper 30s. Sudden, strong cold fronts can bring gale force winds.
Events
Five yearly events are listed by the Corpus Christi visitor bureau or by the organizer.
- The Birdiest Festival in America, each April. The bureau says it celebrates spring migration, with birders from around the world, nationally recognized experts and field trips to coastal birding hotspots.
- Buc Days, usually from late April into May. The festival's site lists Rodeo Corpus Christi, concerts, carnival rides and parades, and the bureau calls it an annual celebration on the coast.
- The Juneteenth festival, each June. The bureau says several weeks of events lead up to it, with live music, food trucks, a kid's zone and a headlining performer.
- The Texas Jazz Festival, each October. The bureau says it is a free, all-ages event with live jazz, food and market vendors.
- The Sharkathon tournament, in October and November. The bureau says it aims to teach fishermen the importance of catch and release when it comes to sharks.
Dates change every year, so check with the organizer before you plan a trip around one.
Beach conditions
The NPS says there are no lifeguards on the beaches in the national seashore, and that lifeguards are present seasonally on some of the beaches operated by the City of Corpus Christi. Before you go to the beach, the NPS tells visitors to check NOAA's surf zone forecast for the rip current risk and to view the Texas Beach Watch reports on water quality.
If you go to a hatchling release, the NPS allows photos and video only with the flash and other lights turned off. It says lights disorient the hatchlings. It also says shells are more plentiful after large storms and during very low tides.
