Overview

Corpus Christi is a seaport at the mouth of the Nueces River, on the west end of Corpus Christi Bay. It is the county seat of Nueces County. The Handbook of Texas calls it the largest city on the South Texas coast.

Padre Island is a long sand barrier island that starts just east of the city. It runs some 130 miles down the coast of South Texas and is separated from the mainland by the Laguna Madre. The National Park Service (NPS) says Padre Island National Seashore is the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world.

The Handbook of Texas lists boating, swimming, fishing, camping and bird watching among the things to do around the city. It names Padre Island National Seashore and the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge as places that offer them.

When to visit

NPS says the Kemp's ridley sea turtle nests on the beach at Padre Island National Seashore from late April through mid-July. It also says a sea turtle hatchling release is a popular activity in mid-summer, and that you can learn about the releases on the park's site.

The park sits along the Central Flyway, and NPS says over 380 bird species are migratory, overwintering or resident there. It calls the park a favorite location for birders any time of the year.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, according to NOAA. Storms sometimes form outside those dates. Check the forecast from the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi and follow local officials.

History

In prehistoric times the area was home to tribes of the Karankawa group. The city began in September 1839, when Henry Lawrence Kinney and William P. Aubrey set up a trading post on the west shore of Corpus Christi Bay. By the mid-1840s it was a small village called Corpus Christi, which means "the Body of Christ." In 1846 it became the county seat of the new Nueces County.

For years the town had no deepwater port. Large ships could not enter the bay and had to anchor offshore. A powerful hurricane hit the city on September 14, 1919, and destroyed much of the North Beach area and the central business district. Leaders then pushed for a deepwater port, and the city celebrated its opening on September 14, 1926. From 1920 to 1930 the population more than doubled, from 10,522 to 27,741.

Padre Island first appears on a map from 1519. The first known land grant on the island went to Padre José Nicolás Ballí and his nephew in 1805. NPS says four nations have owned the island at different times: Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas and the United States.

Getting around

Corpus Christi lies at the junction of Interstate 37 and U.S. highways 77 and 181. Padre Island is connected to the mainland by causeways at each end.

NPS says you cannot drive from Padre Island National Seashore straight south to South Padre Island, because a waterway called Mansfield Channel cuts through the island at the south end of the park. To drive between the two, you go inland through Corpus Christi and down Highway 77, a trip NPS puts at 3 to 4 hours.

Getting here

These drive times come from the OSRM routing service, which uses OpenStreetMap data. Each one starts at the center of the city and ends in Corpus Christi. Drive times vary with traffic, so allow extra time on busy days.

  • From Houston: about 210 miles and about 4 hours. The route uses I-69, US 59, US 77, FM 136 and TX 35.
  • From Austin: about 195 miles and about 3 hours 45 minutes. The route uses US 183, US 77 Alt, FM 136 and TX 35.
  • From San Antonio: about 145 miles and about 2 hours 30 minutes. The route uses I-37 and US 281.
