Overview

A romantic trip here is mostly about water, light and slowing down: a sunset from a boat or a pier, a waterfront dinner, a quiet stretch of beach. The places in this guide are the ones tagged Romantic in our directory, so the lists below change when the tag does.

The Port Aransas tourism bureau frames a romantic escape for newlywed honeymooners, couples celebrating a milestone anniversary, or anyone who wants time together. Its suggested itinerary includes mimosas at brunch, a fresh platter of oysters at a romantic dinner, and dancing at one of the nightspots.

The Corpus Christi visitor bureau says its waterfront restaurants pair fresh coastal cuisine, handcrafted cocktails and scenic bay views to create the perfect setting for anniversaries, celebrations or a romantic evening. The Rockport-Fulton bureau says the area's waterfront restaurants suit a romantic evening as well as a family dinner or a casual meal with friends.

What to do

Rockport & Fulton

The Rockport-Fulton visitor bureau says waterfront dining there means open-air patios, fishing boats returning to the harbor, live music and sunsets over Aransas Bay. For a quieter sunset, Aransas Pathways says Howard Murph Memorial Park, listed here as Murph Park, is an excellent location for enjoying sunsets, birdwatching, kayaking, fishing and unwinding, with picnic tables and benches. Copano's says its menu runs from seafood dishes and steaks to vegetarian options and desserts, and it publishes a whiskey menu. The Coastal Mercantile Wine Bar is tucked in the back of the store in downtown Rockport, and it says it has a vast wine, beer and hard seltzer list, trays of cured meats and cheeses, and live music on its outdoor patio.

Port Aransas

The Port Aransas tourism bureau suggests a sunset dolphin cruise aboard the Scarlet Lady, and says you cannot watch the sun set over the beach there but can see sunsets from the ship channel side of the island. It also points to handmade pasta at Venetian Hot Plate. For a day outdoors, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says Mustang Island State Park has more than five miles of coastline, and suggests getting up early to witness the sun rising over the surf.

Corpus Christi & Padre Island

The Corpus Christi visitor bureau's date night guide calls The Mariner an easy pick for date night, with bayfront views and an intimate, polished feel, and says the setting suits cocktails before a waterfront stroll. The page for The Mariner itself lists drinks and tapas upstairs. The bureau says Snoopy's Pier delivers one of the few truly unobstructed sunset views in Corpus Christi, and that Doc's Seafood and Steaks is an easy choice for a date with sunset views and live music. Doc's says it affords diners great indoor and outdoor views alongside fresh Gulf seafood, with live music every night. The bureau says Nueces Whiskey Library offers a relaxed yet refined setting for date night, with dim lighting and an extensive global whiskey collection. For an evening that is not a bar or a restaurant, the bureau points to Harbor Playhouse, which says it is the oldest continually operating community theatre in Texas. On the water, Corpus Christi Sunset Cruises by LMA says parties are limited to six passengers, and Padre Boat Tours says guests are welcome to bring a small cooler with a favorite beverage and snacks, and that it takes private rentals for occasions such as a surprise proposal. The city of Corpus Christi says Whitecap Beach is at the end of the Whitecap road on North Padre Island, with a shoreline for pedestrians only and an area for cars.

When to visit

Corpus Christi Sunset Cruises by LMA (Laguna Madre Anglers) says spring and summer evenings on Corpus Christi Bay and the Laguna Madre are perfect for its guided dolphin watch and sunset tours, and that trips run with a confirmed reservation. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department suggests visiting Mustang Island State Park in cooler months for a quieter beach experience.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, according to NOAA. Storms sometimes form outside those dates. Check the forecast from the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi.

Getting around

The city of Corpus Christi says that on its Gulf beaches beach parking permits are required, the speed limit is 15 mph, and campfires are allowed if they are no larger than 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet and leave no residue. It lists Whitecap Beach among the Gulf beaches it manages with Nueces County and the state. The city asks visitors to fully extinguish a campfire and to replace any sand taken out of a hole.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says Mustang Island State Park often reaches capacity and highly recommends reservations for day use, and that reserving a pass online or by phone guarantees entry.

The Rockport-Fulton bureau says many waterfront restaurants sit near marinas and harbors, so you can arrive by boat or enjoy the view of the water while you dine.

In Port Aransas, the tourism bureau says the nightspots, lounges and bars are all walkable, and it suggests a golf cart rental.
